Providing “Eye Candy” in Dallas
Luxury apartment complex features multiple uses of Plexineon
In a city that does everything big and bold, a new luxury apartment high-rise fits right in.
The Taylor stretches 17 stories high and houses 308 luxury units and amenities — providing upscale living in the heart of the uptown neighborhood in Dallas, steps away from dining, shopping, culture and entertainment.
The area’s exciting vibe is what inspired the building’s contemporary exterior as well as the sophisticated interior, where first and second floor common areas feature multiple, expansive applications of iLight Plexineon White 1X 3500 LED fixtures. The result: posh spaces that retain a sense of fun — suiting the young professionals who typically call The Taylor home.
“Plexineon is a top-tier product, and there’s real value there that translates into less time spent by us as designers. I just love the work iLight does ahead of time.” – Scott Oldner, Owner, Lighting Designer, Project Manager, Scott Oldner Lighting Design
The Design Challenge
With interiors designed by Marly + Co. to resemble a boutique hotel, the challenge was adding lighting that would feel fresh and not “typical” for a residential tower.
Taking a cue from curvilinear architectural features, Scott Oldner, of Scott Oldner Lighting Design, made the most of Plexineon’s ability to bend.
First, he used exposed lines of Plexineon to create a wave pattern along the ceiling that threads its way through several interconnected spaces — adding bling and casual fun to offset some of the more formal interior design.
Unlike cove lighting, which would have looked “dated,” Oldner says direct view is fitting for the cool, hip area that surrounds The Taylor. “It’s eye candy — a ‘look at me’ statement that’s appropriate here in Dallas. In the middle of the Great Plains, we have to build our beauty.”
Oldner applied Plexineon to a different effect beneath a second floor balcony area, where the fixtures illuminate translucent panels hanging from a tiered ceiling. The look is sculptured and hints at Art Deco, while remaining soft. “It’s like piping or ribbon,” Oldner says.
Last, Plexineon fixtures illuminate a display of curving blue translucent material hanging above a bar area — a focal point that serves as art.
The Plexineon Advantage
The combined result is a dynamic harmony of elements that make a striking first impression as you step into The Taylor.
Beyond aesthetics, Oldner appreciated that iLight was meticulous about each step — with tailored drawings and great questions — to ensure installation would go smoothly.
“Plexineon is a top-tier product,” he says, “and there’s real value there that translates into less time spent by us as designers. I just love the work iLight does ahead of time.”
