A Lesson in Resourcefulness
iLight Handrail System provides a budget-friendly solution at school entrance
With a 400-year history, the Collegiate School on Manhattan’s upper West Side is the oldest independent school in the United States and one of New York City’s most prestigious private schools.
However, in conceiving a new facility for the school, planners and the school community were focused firmly on the future. Constructed at 301 Freedom Place South, the 11-story building features a sleek glass facade and 180,000 square feet of classroom, athletics, performing arts, library, dining, and administrative space. At night, it glows from within — the light extending outside, where iLight’s new Handrail Lighting System illuminates stairs leading to the front entrance.
The Design Challenge
Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design oversaw architectural lighting design for both the school’s interior and exterior. Budget restrictions presented a challenge to creatively and resourcefully support the vision for the project. “There was tremendous pricing pressure on this job,” says Stephen Bernstein, Founder and Principal at the firm.
Another overriding consideration was safety. “Since this was a school, it was important to meet standards established for safe lighting, but at same time, be sure the design comported with the architects’ design as well,” Bernstein adds.
Further, since the new building was being built in an urban residential area, exterior lighting could not be intrusive. “There had to be minimal light trespass, and fixtures could not be visible from nearby residential buildings,” says Alexis Arnoldi, Senior Associate.
As a result, the CBBLD team suggested that handrails at the entrance be designed to double as lighting sources — creating a streamlined look.
After considering one lighting product, the CBBLD team learned of another: iLight’s new Handrail Lighting System, which offers a high-quality solution at an economical price.
“We were going to go with another product, but the iLight Handrail Lighting System provided the same quality at a lower cost,” Bernstein says. “It gave us a very targeted solution.”
For more than a decade, iLight has been manufacturing its LED Handrail Lighting System as an OEM for architectural hardware manufacturer C.R. Laurence.
iLight now offers the system exclusively to specifiers, providing the best of both worlds: an LED light engine designed and manufactured by an expert in LED lighting, plus handrail hardware designed and built by the leader in architectural hardware.

The iLight Advantage
For the Collegiate School project, the iLight system enabled CBBLD to meet the project’s tight budget restrictions, without sacrificing quality.
“Very often, when you have light under a handrail, there is a pixilation. What is good about iLight’s product is that you get a continuous line of light,” Bernstein says.
By staying within budget, planners were able to fulfill their responsibility to the school community. At the same time, they employed an elegant wayfinding solution that also reflects the building’s innovative aesthetic.
