General Questions

What is an LED?

A light-emitting diode (LED) is an electronic light source based on the semiconductor diode. LEDs present many advantages over traditional light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved robustness, and smaller size.

Why are LEDs better than neon?

LEDs have many benefits over neon lights. Neon requires high voltage and toxic gas and should not be within reach. Due to its fragile material, neon can be easily broken. Our products are low voltage and energy efficient, stay cool to the touch, durable, and do not require the use of hazardous substances.

How are LEDs different from fiber optics, glass neon, or cold cathode?

LEDs come in different levels of brightness and hues. High brightness LEDs are the latest in this technology. Products that use high brightness LEDs do have many benefits over other technologies such as fiber optics, glass neon or cold cathode. LEDs are known to have long lifetimes, typically run on less energy, and are run on low voltage systems.
iLight Technologies’ linear LED lighting products offer smooth, even light output, low energy consumption and a narrow profile that is perfect for architectural and accent lighting design.

Where can iLight’s products be installed?

All of iLight’s products are versatile, customizable and can be easily installed in both interior and exterior applications including direct and indirect lighting, linear trim lighting, cove lighting, accent lighting, signage and more. Please see our Gallery page for examples.

What is the minimum space required for ventilation?

Plexineon requires a minimum 1″ space on three sides of the fixture; left, right and front for ventilation, along with a 3/8” gap on each end.

Is the 3/8” required gap between fixtures in a run noticeable?

Because of Plexineon’s advanced light distribution properties, the required 3/8” (10mm) gap is not noticeable on most installations. From a distance or when installed in an indirect view, the lighting will appear continuous.

How are the fixtures connected to each other in a run?

Every Plexineon fixture has a connector wire on each end allowing the end-to-end connection of fixtures to create a run. Each fixture has one female connector and one male connector. One of the connector wires is always used as the lead-in wire that transmits power to the fixture either through a power supply or another fixture.

How is the fixture connected to a power supply?

Each Plexineon fixture has a lead-in wire that gets wired to the power supply. Power supplies must be mounted within forty feet (12.19 m) of the first Plexineon fixture (if 14 AWG wire is used). The total length in wire used on any given run is 40 feet (12.192m) when using 14 AWG wire. However, if using a larger gauged wire, the power supply can be remotely located, up to 100’ away. Please go to the  Plexineon Installation Manual for more information.

Can the power supply be remotely located? What is the maximum distance allowed?

Yes, power supplies can be installed anywhere from 40’ to 100’ away, depending on the gauge of wire used.

  • 10 gauge wire = 100’ distance between fixture and power supply.
  • 12 gauge wire = 60’ distance between fixture and power supply.
  • 14 gauge wire = 40’ distance between fixture and power supply.

Please go to the  Plexineon Installation Manual for more information.

How many feet of the product can be powered to the same power supply?

This will depend on the color of the Plexineon fixture.

  • White 2X Series = 20’ maximum length per power supply
  • White 1X Series = 32’ maximum length per power supply
  • Cool Color Series (Blue, Green, Teal, Magenta, Rose, Yellow) = 32’ maximum length per power supply
  • Warm Color Series (Red, Daytime Red, Amber, Orange) = 48’ maximum length per power supply

Please go to the Product Info page for more information.

What is the difference between a parallel connected run and serial connected run?

A parallel connected run is when multiple runs of Plexineon are terminated directly into a common power supply. A serial connected run is when one end of a Plexineon fixture is connected to the power supply and the other end is connected to the next fixture and passing power to it.

Is there energy savings by wiring in parallel vs. series?

Yes, there are energy savings when one power supply is used for parallel runs of Plexineon verses serial runs.

Can more Plexineon be supported on a power supply if wired in parallel?

Yes, because each run is individually connected back to the same power supply, which allows additional fixtures to be powered.

What power supplies are available?

Depending on the type of installation, iLight offers three Class-2 24VDC, 100 watt power supply options:

  • Advance Power Supply
  • Justin Outdoor Power Supply
  • Magtech Outdoor Power Supply
